Perhaps it was tying her new shoes before our shopping trip. Perhaps it is our shared love of writing. Perhaps it was the recent third grade retreat that delved into Ephesians 6:10ff. Whatever the perhaps, I was thrilled with my granddaughter’s suggestion as we walked across the mall parking lot. “You should do a blog called “Tying Your Shoes for God.’” “What would I say in a so-named blog?” She suggested that I could blog about putting on the armor of God. So be it. Let’s Lace ‘em Up for God!
Conjure in your mind a picture of a serious runner on a track just before the gun sounds on the race of a lifetime. Just before settling into the start position runners check or retie their shoelaces. They make sure that their shoes are secure. In that moment, all eagerness, preparedness, and readiness reach their fullness. Shoes secure. Race on.
What part does the word eager play in your life? I am always eager for the shore. What longing comes to your mind? The Apostle Paul was eager to share the gospel (Romans 1:17). That’s a stretch for the best of us! Do you want to have more than a meager eager for God? Let the words of Jesus inspire you today. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled (Matthew 5:6). It has done wonders for my zeal for seeking and speaking God.
For the runner, preparation requires a diligent and disciplined approach to training. There is no substitute for preparedness. I see devotion to God as an indication of my willingness to cooperate with His plan and purpose for my life. Preparation removes the hinderances to advancement as we run our faith races. Years ago I memorized Hebrews 12:1. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses (see Hebrews 11), let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us (see Hebrew 12:2-3). I must confess that this verse has helped me clean a few closets over the years, too!
There isn’t a pause between “READY-SET-GO”. There is no time to dally. Our readiness goes beyond a uniform and a numbered pinnie. The course for the Christ follower requires that we take dressing for the race to a higher dimension. We must put on God—His righteousness, salvation, truth, faith, eternal life, and power. We win our race by following rather than leading. Before we even lace our shoes we have already won! We run to exemplify the best of God in us. Practice readiness, dear ones. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus Philippians 3:14.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power Ephesians 6:10. Before you run the race tighten those faith laces. Secure your Christian Character. Be strong in God’s Word. Be filled with God’s Spirit. Run for God’s glory. And by all means, do not carry the weight of unconfessed sin or bitterness. Oh! And one more thing…velcro is no substitute for Lacing up for God.
OPP (opportunity for action): Bring God into the moment when your children dress or put on their shoes (tie, velcro or slip ons). “Whatever you do today, remember that God loves you and will be with you.” Incremental references to God presence and interest in their lives from a mother of faith will fortify them for the race marked out for them. In time, they will come to understand the need to Lace ‘em Up for God.
